How Convenient! Boston Bodegas and the Immigrant Experience

A friend of mine and fellow photographer Peter Bates is exhibiting his work at The Newton Free Library from now until July 31. I had a chance to go to the opening reception last week.

What I liked about his exhibit is that Peter chose a project to drive his photographic passion. He chose to photograph Boston Bodegas at twilight using HDR techniques. His work is wonderful. but better yet, Peter interviewed the owners and wrote a back story about each Bodega and their owner. It is a wonderful exhibit.

This year was my most creative year photographically. I photographed a vintage sailing regatta in Newport RI, photographed San Francisco, San Diego, Cincinnati, and Limerick Ireland. I photographed at the Roger Williams Botanical Garden, the Boston Marathon, the RI Air Show, a cranberry bog and my friend's lighthouse (The Wings Neck Lighthouse) with the most amazing photographic moment being my 24 hour stay on the USS Abraham Lincoln.

While on business I spend a few days in the village of Adare in Ireland. Adare is a quant vacation village with a wonderful old world feel. I had some time to photograph the Adare Manor . The manor was built by the Second Earl of Dunraven and his wife, Lady Caroline Wyndham in 1832. It was a pleasant photographic study. Sailing Newport – Enhanced Podcast

1) The camera simply "nails" exposure. On my Canon 40D, I almost always have to adjust the exposure compensation since the camera almost never gets it right. On the 7D, it is a no brainer. I decided to do a bit of experimentation with time lapse photography during my recent trip to Las Vegas. I was fortunate enough to have a room on the 32nd floor of the MGM Signature Hotel. Since I was nice to the person who checked me in, I was able to get a great corner room facing the Vegas strip. The room also had an open balcony which was a huge plus.

It is important if you are going to take photography seriously to understand where photography came from. I found a wonderful podcast by Jeff Curto a professor at the College of Dupage. The podcast is his "History of Photography" class. A lot of work went into this podcast since they are enhanced podcasts meaning that he has incorported each of his slides / images into the podcast. It began with this picture taken in 1978. I was on a ferry off the New Jersey shore. No idea where I was going when I saw this seagull sitting on a pylon. What I like about this picture is that at the moment just before I pressed the shutter, the seagull struck this pose. The picture is faded now, and the negative is long lost. But the memory of that moment is vivid and it is because of ability to grab a moment of time that allowed me to keep the moment all these years. This is the reason I take pictures.

I've been on a journey over the last two years, rekindling my love of photography. The catalyst of this love came from the move to a digital SLR camera after years of different digital point and shoot cameras and two decades of a Canon A1 SLR camera.

With Digital SLR's becoming so capable, reaching price points that can be tolerated for the serious amateur photographer, there is a new groundswell for photography.
